The Head of State David Granger will be attending the Islamic American Summit in Saudi Arabia from Sunday upon the invitation of the King of Saudi Arabia.
The summit will bring together leaders in the world’s Islamic nations to address ways of building more robust and effective partnerships to counter and prevent the growing threat of terrorism and violent extremism around the world.
At the weekly post cabinet press briefing, Minister of State Joseph Harmon said that leaders will be looking at ways to promote tolerance and modernization in the Islamic world.
Harmon said that Saudi Arabia will be providing air transportation to and from the summit. Additionally, the Arab state will be footing all other expenses including accommodation and travel within that country.
Harmon, when asked about the issues to be raised with the United States of America President Donald Trump who will be attending the summit, said that there are no issues on the table at the moment since there is no set agenda for the summit.
What Harmon was sure about is that the issue in relation to the Islamic Development Bank and the loan facilities that Guyana is privy to will form part of the President’s engagement.
The government had approached the Islamic Development Bank for funding after there were talks of building a bridge across the Corentyne River to Suriname. The government had also said that it was looking at assistance from the same bank to offset a number of major road projects.
The government is still to get that assistance since there are a number of hurdles that have to be overcome before those funds are made available. Harmon was asked if he was dissatisfied with the sloth at which that help is forthcoming.
The State Minister said that government is not concerned because it is aware that there are processes that have to be followed. Harmon said that upon becoming a member of that bank to which Minister of Finance Winston Jordan is a part of the board, they knew that things are to be done in a specific way.
The President will be accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Greenidge; Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Audrey Waddell; Shiraz Mohamed, First Secretary of the Guyana Permanent Mission at the United Nations; and Moin-ul Hack, Director of Education, Central Islamic Organization of Guyana.
