WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, June 6, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- METHANOL SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

The Methanol Institute (MI), the trade association for the global methanol industry, invites interested parties to access MI's full range of methanol safe handling information.

Our Methanol Safe Handling Manual addresses both common and technical questions related to methanol handling, storage and transport. The deep collaboration of MI and our member companies in producing this vital resource for educational and training purposes highlights our continuing commitment to safety.

The manual was thoroughly revised for 2017 to be more user friendly and adaptable and features a new section on process safety, with detailed explanation about key elements of Process Safety Management (PSM) which are in-line with the best industrial practices specific to methanol. The manual also includes a new chapter on fire safety which takes into account current best practices. In addition to the revised 263-page manual, MI has created a standalone module focusing specifically on health and safety, for users looking to directly access this critical information. The companion Methanol Safe Handling Video can be viewed both on our website and our Methanol Institute YouTube page.

TECHNICAL BULLETINS

MI's website also contains a wealth of additional methanol safe handling information, including technical bulletins such as our Methanol Small Quantities Bulletin, which addresses the safe handling and transport of less than 60 gallons of methanol; our bulletin on Atmospheric Above Ground Tank Storage of Methanol, which examines the guidelines for designing, fabricating, constructing, repairing and safeguarding above-ground methanol storage tanks. Other bulletins include Methanol Drum Transport Handling and Storage, Precautions for Loading and Unloading Methanol, a three-part series on Using Physical and Chemical Properties to Manage Flammable Liquid Hazards, and more.

METHANOL SAFE HANDLING AND SAFE BERTHING

MI has published a Methanol Safe Handling and Safe Berthing Technical Bulletin. This bulletin sets new marine industry standards in the loading and unloading of methanol cargo vessels. Over the years, ship operators and terminal operators have made significant progress in introducing new safety procedures and safer designs to minimize risks. This technical bulletin highlights industry best practices and sets guidelines for the industry to follow. A technical bulletin and six checklists have been developed as part of this effort.

• Declaration of Security
• Declaration of Inspection
• Methanol Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Marine Terminal Checklist
• Marine Vessel/Barge Checklist
• Terminal and Vessel Pre/Post Transfer Checklist & Time Log

Together, the technical bulletin and checklists provide a comprehensive suite of materials which enable ship and terminal operators to ensure that they are working at the cutting edge of industry safety and environmental stewardship knowledge.

BOOTLEG ALCOHOL PREVENTION

In addition, the Safety page of MI's website contains a wealth of information about bootleg alcohol prevention. The Methanol Institute (MI) and its members commit significant resources to ensuring safe use and handling of methanol throughout the global supply chain. The illegal manufacturing and distribution of contaminated alcoholic beverages can lead to injury and loss of life. This is largely preventable through proper enforcement, consumer education, and medical training.

The bootleg alcohol prevention page of our website includes a look at global poisoning incidents since 1994; frequently asked questions on methanol poisoning and treatment; presentations and videos on methanol safe handling and poison prevention; a look at MI's work to prevent bootleg alcohol poisoning in Indonesia, Vietnam and elsewhere; and a guidebook for those interested in starting their own pilot program to combat bootleg alcohol poisoning.
